Did you know that crochet, as we know it today, started taking shape in England during the mid-1820s? I didn’t either—until I began digging into the origins of this amazing craft that so many of us love. What I found was fascinating!
Crochet has deeper roots than many of us realize. It’s believed to have evolved from a technique called “shepherd’s knitting,” which was practiced in Denmark. This early form of crochet used a single hook and was quite different from the fancy lace patterns we often associate with the craft today.
Interestingly, the word “crochet” itself comes from the French word crochet, meaning “hook.” The term was originally used in 17th-century lace making. From fine lace to cozy blankets, it’s amazing to see how crochet has grown over the centuries into such a beloved and versatile art.
As someone who crochets daily and pours love into every stitch, it’s fun to explore where this tradition began. Whether you're a fellow maker or someone curious about the craft, it’s always good to know where our creative roots come from!
